The History of U Can Store It

The Beginning

U Can Store It’s history goes all the way back to the start of the 20th century when our sister company, S Jones Containers, was founded. The company was initially established in 1914 by Samuel ‘Sammy’ Jones who became a Haulage Contractor in Aldridge, just north of Birmingham.

Sammy transported his first consignment, reputedly cases of crockery, from Aldridge railway station by horse and cart to the local ‘Manor House’. By 1920 he had acquired his first motor lorry, a Thornycroft, and by 1936 was operating two lorries.

Our First Site

In 1936, Sammy’s son, Edward Jones, took over the family business and formed S Jones (Aldridge) Ltd. Over the course of the next 25 years, the business built up a large fleet of tipper lorries operating throughout the UK and later diversified into general haulage.

During this time the business moved from central Aldridge to its present location in Anglian Road, Aldridge – which you may recognise as the home of our first U Can Store It site!

Michael Jones, Edward’s son, joined the family business in 1962 and together they progressed the business and became the Main Distributors for ERF Trucks while also operating the first HGV driver training school in the country.

Expanding the Business

The container revolution commenced in the UK around 1970. S Jones’s general haulage fleet evolved into container transport, which led the company to become one of the largest Shipping Container Depots in the Midlands. Continuing the family business, Andrew Jones joined the company and has overseen the business expand into allied fields, such as U Can Store It Self Storage.

U Can Store It was established in 2000, and has extensive facilities at Aldridge, West Bromwich, and Coventry. We continue to exceed our customer’s expectations for service and cost.
